I recently went to the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas for my five year anniversary. It was a wonderful experience and it makes me wonder why i live in Wisconsin! I went there with my husband for a week and we stayed at the Sugar Bay Resort.
The people of the Virgin Islands are British Accented. I asked one lady were she came from, and she laughed and said the Virgin Islands. She later told me that her grandparents came from England.
Food at the resort was most defiantly on the tropics side. They had all sorts of fresh fruits and every meal had the option of fresh seafood. Walking around in Charlotte Amalie, which is the main city of St. Thomas, they had all sorts of tropical treats. Without a doubt, families living in the Virgin Islands have traditional recipes that have came from England. How unique is that?

Here is another story of mine that i would like to share with you travelers.

 New York City, a city filled with culture and different ethnics. I traveled there for New Years 2015, and let me say, there is a lot of history in that city. All of the buildings have a story, and all of the different foods have a culture they came from. I went to china town and had some amazing food that I didn't know the name for. I looked at the menu and ordered the coolest looking word. Walking around I saw a sweets shop. The sweets shop was filled with all sorts of desserts from creams to chocolates to hard candies. This would be a great place for me to find a daily cultural item. I would find something that came to New York from immigrants and there culture. Possibly pizza! Or Cheese Cake! I'm betting those came from overseas at some point.

Main Street Bakery Contest

Hello dear followers and thank you once again for visiting the Main Street Bakery Blog! I have been hearing from customers that my blog is very interesting and every once in a while stories are exchanged about traveling and the culturally diverse foods. This is great news for my bakery considering my daily cultural item!
Seeing as everyone enjoys my cultural traveling on my blog, I want to hear about your experiences so I can create them in my store. I am announcing a contest on my blog and I want to hear about your unique cultural experiences. The winner will receive 50 dollars. In your post please include a picture of the place you have been, and a story about your experience! I will be judging based on how unique your picture and story is. Diversity is welcome. Here is an example story to set the stage.

This is a picture taken when I was in Prague in 2012. The opportunity presented itself to travel there and I wasn't about to say no. During the trip, i could see history all around me. The buildings were hundreds of years old, the streets were of old cobblestone, and the food was most defiantly new to me. When i was there i walked around a lot. By walking around, I came across this artifact. This is a memorial for victims of the Holocaust. It starts in the front which displays a whole man prior to the Holocaust. Each step backwards is the symbolic damage done to victims. In the end, the man is no longer a man. I could feel the history by being in the area and felt like a part of history in that time.

The Danish

When you think of the Danish croissant dessert, you might think that it came from the Danes, but actually it has come from Austria, and over time it was developed by the Danish culture. There was a strike among bakers in the 1850s in Demark for more of the Austrian Danish dessert. It was a new item and it was not well known. Bakery’s had to hire foreign people to show the ways of making this dessert, and it was then evolved with more egg and fat, to make it more delicious than it already was. As time went on, and Danish people immigrated to America, and so the Danish dessert came with. That is how it came to be in the United States.

Today I decided to make an easy Danish Croissant that anyone would be able to make. I have made a Video to walk you through the process, and I hope you enjoy the recipe!

Apple Pie

Hello and happy march. Its been a while since I have made a post, and i have decided to to take things back to the history of America for the daily culture item. The first thing that came to mind with American culture and desserts was of course the apple pie.
Apple Pie was first brought to the American Colonies in the 17th and 18th century from the Dutch, Swedish, and British. In the new lands they had no fruit bearing trees, there was a gape when they had to wait for the Europeans apple tree varieties to start bearing fruit. The only apple they had access to were the crab apples which are small and sour. One way they would try and deal with the sour apples was to soak them in vinegar to balance the flavor out.
As the apple pie grew in awareness it also developed. The mock apple pie came to be known. It was thought to have been invented during the civil war when the southern states had a shortage of food. In 1930 Ritz crackers promoted the use of there crackers for the use of mock apple pie!
Many terms have been used regarding the apple pie over the years. It used to be called "evening meal of the children." One newspaper in 1902 declared the pie, "No pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished." That is saying a lot about the pie considering the time period! It is clear the apple pie will be around forever! Do you have any nicknames or stories about American Pies?

Turkey

Hello! And I hope all of you are enjoying this warm sunny day! I think this is the first day of the year that I didn’t have to wear my coat and i'm loving it! Well, to start this blog post, happy Monday! Have you been thinking about my last cultural item the Leche Flan? It was so delicious! I hope you made it to my bakery last Monday! And if you didn’t, there is a new item everyday. 

This Monday I am taking you to the origins of Turkey. I have decided to take on a desert called baklava. That is such a fun word to say, maybe even make it a pets name?? Baklava.

Anyways, this desert comes from turkey like I said. In Istanbul, sultans reigned for 624 years from 1465-1856, and this desert comes from the kitchens of there palace.

So, what is baklava ?

Everyday you get to experience a new part of the world at main street bakery! I will continue to update you on different ideas of mine, feel free to give me advice on a different cultures, I'm all ears!
